LORDSTOWN — John Trombitas Sr., 92, of Lordstown, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at the Community Skilled Nursing Center. John was born Jan. 30, 1922, in Salem, a son of George and Paraschiva Ziga Trombitas.

WARREN - James "Jimmy" Stephen Rimar, 88, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014. The sixth son of Andrew and Barbara Yuhaz Rimar, Jimmy was born Aug.7, 1926, in Leechburg, Pa.

WARREN - Cornelia "Connie" Koontz, 94, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015 at home, surrounded by her loving sons, Ted and Tom Sass. Connie will be remembered by her family and friends as a sweet, kind spirit and a devout Romanian Orthodox dedicated to her Lord Jesus.

Warren – Mary G. Stan, 88, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2016 at her residence.

She was born March 19, 1927, in Warren, Ohio the daughter of the late Samuel and Elena Gania.

She was a June 1945 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. She retired from Warren City Schools after working in the cafeteria at Warren G. Harding for twenty years and had previously worked in tabulating department at the Warren Telephone Company for ten years after graduating.

Mary was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church and Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid sports fan and had season tickets for forty five years to watch her son Robert and grandson Rocco play for the Warren G. Harding Panther/Raiders.

She also enjoyed watching her grandsons Craig and Kyle play for the Howland Tigers. She loved The Ohio State Football, except when they played The Michigan State Spartans, where Rocco continued his career. Her favorite pro-teams were the Cleveland Browns, Cavaliers and Indians. She loved doing the daily puzzles in the tribune, scratch-off lottery tickets and an occasional trip to the casino. Her whole life was her grandchildren and their activities.

She felt she was blessed to stay home and raise her children for fourteen years prior to returning to the work force.

She is survived by her three children Robert (Jill) Stan of Niles, Elaine (Dale) Cironi of Warren, and Mark(Maria) Stan of Liberty, seven grandchildren Ryan (Jen) Stan, Jason (Jenna) Stan, Craig Stan, Kyle Stan, Rocco (Allison) Cironi, Nicholas Cironi and Jena Cironi, and two great grandchildren Ava Stan and Gianna Cironi, and a brother George (Virginia) Gania of Warren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl P. Stan whom she married January 28, 1951 and passed away December 9, 1995, and a sister Helen Rimar.

Family and friends may call Monday, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. with a 4:30 p.m. Saracusta Service and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren.

A Service will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Church with Fr. James Barkett officiating.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Warren – Christine Ciulei, 96, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016 a Gillette Nursing Home after a long illness with dementia.

She was born December 17, 1919 in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of the late John and Salomie Baciu.

She was a member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church where she sang in the Choir for 50 years. Christine was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, Precinct Volunteer for many years for the Trumbull County Election Board on Election Day, and was a member of the Warren G. Harding Band Booster. She enjoyed baking and sewing.

She is survived by her two children Robert “Bob” Ciulei of Warren, and Cheryl Ciulei of Warren, two grandchildren Scott (Katy) Ciulei of Columbus, OH and Heather (Justin) Cattleft of Copley, OH, seven great grandchildren Oliver, Xavier Rosellie and Aidan Ciulei, Pacian, Judah and Elias Cattlett, two sisters Mary J. Schuller of Cortland and Helen Moga of Hubbard and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, husband Stephen R. Ciulei who she married July 23, 1944 and passed away August 20, 1986, two brothers Nick and John C. Sr. Baciu and a sister Anna Bolta.

John Besoiu Jr.

March 4, 1946 ~ January 12, 2017 (age 70)

John Besoiu, Jr., 70, of Mineral Ridge, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 12, 2017. 

Born on March 4, 1946 in the Port of Gibraltar, he was the son of the late John Besoiu, Sr. and Anna Oltean Besoiu.

John graduated from Girard High School in 1964.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy.  Thus, in September of 1965 he enlisted in the Seabees and served during the Vietnam War.  During his service, he received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

On July 19, 1969, our dad married the love of his life, our mom, Marilyn Sirbu. 

They are former members of Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church in Youngstown and are current members of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Warren.  He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio and the William Farr Lodge No. 672 in Girard, and was a 32 Degree Mason for the Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, USA in the Youngstown Valley since 1981.

John retired from United Parcel Service (UPS) in 2002 after over 31 years of dedicated service.  In the fall of 2002, he graduated from Trumbull Business College with an Associate of Applied Business and Accounting Degree.

John is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Marilyn; their sons and daughters-in-law, Christopher and Heather of Johnson City, TN, David and Miranda of Solon, OH and Eric and Diana of Cranberry Township, PA; their grandchildren, Tate, Lillian, Olivia and Emma; his brother and sister-in-law, Nicholas and Barbara Besoiu of Liberty Township; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bud and Shelly Sirbu of Indianapolis; and nephews, Phillip Besoiu of New York and Bryan Sirbu and his wife Lydia of Indianapolis.

Family and friends may call Sunday from 2;00 to 4:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren.

ESTERO, Fla. — Rebecca Botar, 86, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at her residence in Estero, Fla.

She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Warren, daughter of Andrew and Christina Marta Botar.

Rebecca was employed as an executive secretary for the former General Electric Trumbull Lamp plant for 35 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of the Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren, where she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary and as secretary of the church council.

Rebecca enjoyed bowling, golf, dining with friends and traveling abroad.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Letitia Botar Hank; brother-in-law, Emil A. Hank; and nephew, Donald Thomas.

She is survived by her three nieces, Kathy Hank Thomas and Nancy Christine Hank, both of Estero, Fla. and Rebecca (David) Hank Bedich, of Carmel, Ind., and their families.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 North Park Ave., Warren, with the Rev. James Barkett officiating. Friends may call 10:30 to 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest near her parents in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Warren - George S. Gania, Sr. 89, of Warren, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side at Washington Square Nursing Home on May 14th, 2018.

He was born April 26, 1929, in Warren, to Samuel and Elena Gania.

George was a 1948 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and throughout his high school years was in the Naval Reserves. He is a Veteran of the Korean Conflict and spent 3 years on active duty as a fireman on the USS LST 762.

George was employed at American Welding and Mfg. Co. as a machinist and retired in 1991.

For over 20 years he enjoyed traveling with his wife to Ocala and Tavares, Florida to escape the cold Ohio winters.  His interests included fishing, woodworking, drawing, golf, gardening, bowling, boating, playing the slots at casinos across the country and being with his family. He loved collecting baseball hats from his travels and had quite the collection at one point.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Virginia, whom he married on April 12, 1953; his son George S. Gania, Jr. (Mary Anne), daughter Jeni (Gania) Nelson (Geoff), son Jerry Gania (Pat), grandsons Geoffrey Gania, Preston Nelson, Ryan Nelson, Sammy Gania, Jeremy Gania and granddaughters Tiffany and Stephanie Chimento and Emily Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law Anna Radu, sisters Helen Rimar and Mary Stan.

George turned his love of automobiles into a career, starting to sell cars while attending Warren G. Harding High School; where he was a catcher on the baseball team. His strong work ethic proved successful as he achieved top sales awards for the state of Ohio.

George purchased Vermillion Ford in Newton Falls, Ohio. He was a successful Ford dealer for over 54 years and received many accolades from Ford Motor Company and his peers. He enjoyed sponsoring Ford’s “Punt Pass and Kick” program for kids, Buckeye Boys State, along with numerous baseball and bowling teams. His indomitable spirit, tenacity and courage could not be silenced by a devastating tornado which destroyed his dealership in May of 1985. Two years later, he reopened Falls Ford Inc. with his wife, Jennie and his children by his side.

George was instrumental in starting the Penn-Ohio Ford Dealers Association and was president of the Ford Dealer Advertising Fund, president of the Warren Optimist Club and The Newton Falls Chamber of Commerce. A founding member and board member of Youngstown Air Reserve Base Community Council. A board member of Warren General Hospital, Kiwanis and member of the Elks Club for 50 years.

In 1964 at the age 29, George was responsible for the enormous undertaking of building The Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church. George secured the financing as a guarantor for a $500,000 loan. Under his masterful leadership as president of the church council and support of the members, the loan was paid in full in 5 years.

He was an avid scholar of history and loved to play golf, scoring two aces “hole in one(s)”. He had a passion for collecting golf clubs and golf bags. He shared his passion by gifting them to friends.

George leaves his wife, Jennie of 59 years; three daughters, Jennifer, Jeannine McCubbins (Paul), Jill and one son, Gregory (Laura); four grandchildren, Grant, Ava, Lance Bumbu and Sarah McCubbins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Letitia and sister, Joyce.

The funeral service will be held at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, 1836 North Road, Warren, Ohio 44483 on Saturday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m.

OCTOBER 29, 1938 ~ OCTOBER 12, 2018 (AGE 79)

Edith “Eady” G. Jibotian, 79, of Niles, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 12, 2018 with family by her side at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.  She was born October 29, 1938 in Howland, the daughter of Bill and Lillian (Tilton) Simpson, and had lived in the area all her life.

A graduate of Howland High School, Eady was a generous and loving person to all who knew her.  She had a heart of gold.  Eady retired from General Motors after fifteen years of employment.  She belonged to the YMCA and the Red Hat Ladies, and enjoyed any occasion to get together with family, from trips to picnics to vacations to any other gathering.  Eady also enjoyed cooking and took great pleasure in preparing meals for family get to geathers;  going shopping, going to the movies, and playing volleyball.

She is sadly missed by her loving husband of almost 61 years, Nick Jibotian, whom she married November 17, 1957; two children, Nick (Karin) Jibotian, Jr. of Warren and Brenda (Bob) Burns of Central, S.C.; four grandchildren: Chris, Ben, Maranda, and Malea; one great-grandchild, Roman; and two brothers, Bill (Betty) Simpson of Williamsfield and Charlie (Eileen) Simpson of Middlefield.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Bill and Lillian; a son, Dan Jibotian; and a grandson, Brian.

Victor “Vic” Chelsea, 90, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, with his family by his side.

He was born March 26, 1928, in Leavittsburg, the son of the late Philip and Rafila Chelsea.

Vic was a graduate of culinary school in New Haven, Ct. He retired from Copperweld Steel Corp. Vic was a member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, dancing, cooking and having family gatherings.

Vic served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II in Japan and also was a cook in the Merchant Marines.

He is survived by his daughter, Diane Marie Chelsea of Streetsboro; a sister, Virginia Lupu of Cortland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie B. Chelsea, whom he married July 11, 1959, and who passed away March 23, 1989; two brothers, John and Philip Chelsea; and a sister, Mary Streza.

Virginia M. Boyles, 92, passed away March 31, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

She was born April 8, 1926, in Warren, Ohio the daughter of the Late Daniel and Sadie (Muntean) Ogrean. She was a 1945 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. She retired from JC Penney’s as a sales clerk after 30 years. She was an avid bowler and a member of the 300 club, lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, where Virginia was a member of the Order of Yellow Roses.  

She enjoyed scrabble and cross word puzzles.

She is survived by her son David L. Boyles of Hollywood FL, daughter-in-law Karen Boyles Stevens of Fort Pierce, Fl, three grandchildren Heather (Brian) Simeon, Monica Bailey and William J. Boyles, four great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John M. Boyles, a son Patrick Boyles, a brother Walter Ogrean, and four sisters Sarah Pope, Anne Finta, Patsy Cabuz, and Dorothy Edl.

HOWLAND — Octavian “Bert” Bertea, 91, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Trumbull Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 14, 1927, in Canton, the son of the late Octavian M. and Mary Serban Bertea.

Mr. Bertea graduated high school from Culver Military Academy, and received a bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University, and a master’s degree from Kent State University. He also attended Ohio State University for further graduate studies.

He retired from RMI, and was general manager of the sodium and metals plants in Ashtabula.

Bert was devoted to his family and his church, where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Warren.

Bert served his active duty in the U.S. Army with the 8076 MASH Unit in Korea during the war, and upon discharge from active duty remained with the Army Reserves retiring as a full Colonel.

He is survived by his loving wife, Elizbeth “Betty” Bertea, whom he married April 19, 1953; three sons, Craig (Laura) Bertea of Solon, Bruce (Linda) Bertea of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Jeff (Pamela) Bertea of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Allison (Andrew) Morales, Shannon Bertea, Annika Bertea, Tate Bertea and Kyle Bertea.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, John Zoba.

Keeping with Bert’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and a private service will be held Monday. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Thomas R. Carto, 74, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at the Hospice House in Poland.

Tom was born July 22, 1946, in Warren, Ohio the son of Albert and Rebecca Carto.

He was a proud 1964 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and a 1974 graduate of Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. He retired in 1999 from Packard Electric as a tow-motor operator after 34 years. Thomas was a member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren, where he had been a cantor, President for the Church Council for five years, AROY Executive Board, and President of the Orthodox Brotherhood USA.

Tom served our country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

Tom was loved by many family and friends. He took a genuine interest in everyone he met even if it was only for a short time. He was extremely funny and loved making people smile. He looked at life in a positive way. He enjoyed watching birds outside his kitchen window, good food and traveling around the world. He loved watching cooking shows, Jeopardy and PBS. He was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

Tom is survived by his sister Marilyn (Rick) Alberini of Niles, and two nephews Richard T. (Kim) Alberini of Davenport, Fl., and Jeffrey (Kristen) Alberini of Howland, a great niece Ava Alberini, a great nephew Cooper Alberini and several God children. He also leaves behind so many loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family of Tom would like to thank the many doctors, nurses and staff who took care of him at Lake Vista in Cortland, Greenbriar in Boardman, Heritage Manor in Youngstown, University Hospital in Cleveland and The Hospice House in Poland. Special thanks to Fr. James Barkett and his family.

Virginia Lupu

Virginia Lupu, 95, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, at St. Elizabeth Health Care in Youngstown.

She was born April 8, 1925, in Leavittsburg, Ohio, the daughter of Philip and Rafila Chelsea.

Virginia was a devoted Mom, Gram and Buna. She had a special bond with her son, David.

She loved boating, gambling, eating mamaliga and sweets, a good martini and she loved to travel with David. Her favorite places were Las Vegas, California and any warm beach.

She also loved spending quality time with her granddaughters and her great-grandchildren and she loved to watch them do their activities and sports.

Virginia was a life-long member of the Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church.

She is survived by her son, David Lupu of Cortland; three grandchildren, Andrea Smesko (Mark), Stacey Gehring (Ronn) and Kelley Lupu and six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan, Jonathan, Harper, Hayden and Harrison, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John R. Lupu, whom she married on July 19, 1962 and passed away March 19, 1986; as well as, three brothers, Victor, John and Philip, Jr., Chelsea and a sister, Mary Streza.

Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery in Warren.

He was born June 30, 1949, in Warren, the son of John R. and Virginia Lupu.

David was a 1967 graduate of Warren Western Reserve High School. He joined the U.S. Navy right after graduation, where he served for 4 years. While in the Navy, he was an Engineering Machinist Mate Class A.

David worked at Delphi Packard in Warren and retired after 37 years. During his time at Delphi, David also owned and operated Whatever's Fair Lounge. He delivered his famous burgers and fish sandwiches to Delphi employees for many years. Whatever's Fair Lounge was a favorite spot for Delphi workers. They would stop in to get lunch, to cash their checks, and to have a drink after work. David's three daughters were young at the time, and were always running around the bar socializing with all his patrons. After retirement, he enjoyed life to the fullest with his family and friends.

David was a founding member of Harbor Yacht Club in Ashtabula. He had a passion for fishing and boating and developed many lifelong friendships at the boat club. One of his greatest enjoyments was when his daughters and grandchildren visited him at his boat. He loved to take them on boat rides, fishing, tubing, and swimming at the sandbar and at walnut beach. He was an active member of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Warren. One of his favorite contributions to the Church was to cook dinner for the parish, including mamaliga and stuffed cabbage. Pofta Buna! He was also an active member of the Moose Lodge, where he enjoyed meeting up with his friends.

David showed his family unconditional love. He cared for his elderly mother, Virginia, until she passed away November 27, 2020. They did many things together. He would take her to breakfast each morning, drive her around when she wanted to get out of the house, take her to Las Vegas when she got the "itch" to gamble, and "drop in" to all of daughter's houses for visits, whether in Canfield, Streetsboro, or California. David had a loving relationship and a strong bond with each of his three girls. He was incredibly proud of the lovely ladies they turned out to be. Even though David was an only child, he was a brother to so many. He was always willing to help out anyone who called upon him. And he did just that. He had many wonderful qualities and this was one of his best.

David will be deeply missed by his three daughters, Andrea Smesko (Mark), Stacey Gehring (Ronn), Kelley Lupu; and six grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan, Jonathan, Harper, Hayden and Harrison; as well as many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; John R. and Virginia Lupu.

Thomas “Tom” S. Hordobet, 88, of McDonald, entered peacefully into eternal life on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at 10:20 a.m. in his home with his loving family at his side under the comforting care of hospice.

Tom was born on Monday, August 29, 1932 in McDonald the son of the late Maria and Simon Hordobet.

He retired after 30 years from YBM in Youngstown.

Tom was a member of the Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church.

He enjoyed carpentry, gardening and having morning coffee with friends at McDonald’s.

Tom was a loving husband, father, and friend.  His quiet, tender, and loving presence will be forever missed by all who knew him.

Tom leaves behind the love of his life of 58 years, the former Dianna Cibella whom he married on October 20, 1962; three daughters MaryBeth (Dwane) Hordobet; Georgina “Gina” (Bob) Lewis and Patricia “Tish” (Jim) Cetina; grandchildren Tommy, Thor, Travis (Velda), Ryan (Andrea), Courtney (Nate), Ethan (Katelyn) and Hannah; and eight great grandchildren.  Tom also leaves behind his loving brother and sister-in-law Ironim and Paraschiva Hordobet in Romania.

Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a sister Nellie Ross and a niece Janet Ross.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 in the church at 6:30pm a memorial service will be held with Fr. Gramma at Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox 1836 North Rd. NE Warren, Ohio.

A Funeral Service, with Fr. Remes Grama officiating, will take place on Thursday, February 11, 2021 in Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church, where the body will lie in state from 10: a.m. the funeral service will take place at 11am at the church.

Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

Dan Opritza

June 24, 1923 — Nov. 5, 2021 (age 98)

HOWLAND — Dan Opritza, 98, entered peacefully into eternal life Friday (Nov. 5) at 12:55 a.m. at Ohman Family Living at Briar under the comforting care of hospice.

He was born June 24, 1923 in Neshannock Township, Pa., the son of Nicholas and Anna Besoiu Opritza.

He was a graduate of East High School in Youngstown.

Dan attended Youngstown College before enlisting in the United States Army with the 61st Brigade at Fort Hayes. 

He served his country abroad during World War II as a driver and Army automotive mechanic. He was a proud veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. 

For his service to his country he was awarded the Driver & Mechanic Badge, American Theater Ribbon, Eastern Asian Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. 

He was honorably discharged March 31, 1946 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, with the rank of Private First Class.

After returning from the service, Dan worked for more than 30 years with Wean United, first as a longtime machinist. He retired as a computer tool programmer.

Dan was a longtime member of Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church where he sang in the church choir and was past council member and church auditor. 

He was a member of Romanian Veterans of America of Youngstown. 

Dan enjoyed gardening, listening to music and doing crossword puzzles.

Dan was united in marriage with the former Mary Pipenur on Nov. 3, 1946 and they were married for 64 years until her passing May 22, 2011.

He is survived by his children Dennis (Connie) Opritza of Poland and Janet (Jim) Davis of Cortland; grandchildren Jason (Erika) Opritza, Kara Opritza and Taylor (Alex) Mostoller; and great-grandchildren Olivia, Natalie, Sophia, Ava and Asher.

In addition to his parents and wife, Dan was preceded in death by sisters Pauline Wise and Ann Smith; and brothers Nick Opritza and John Opritza.

The body will lie in state Tuesday (Nov.9) from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church. A funeral service with the Very Reverend Joseph Wargo officiating will begin at 11 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow in Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna with full military honors. The Staton-Borowski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Dan’s family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at Ohman Family Living at Briar and Hospice of the Western Reserve for all of the care and comfort they gave to Dan and showed to the family.

MaryJane Bumbu of Florida, affectionately known as “Jennie,” 88, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021.

Jennie always had a smile on her face, joy in her heart and a kind word for others. She was a pleasure to be around and was dearly loved by her family and friends.

Jennie started her work life early. As her brothers served in World War II and her father passed away when she was very young, she was forced to work at a young age. At 12, she worked for the local flower shop and their agricultural farm as a bookkeeper to help her mother. During her high school years, she worked for the president of the local bank to earn enough money to pay her way through college. Jennie graduated in 3 1/2 years from Ohio University in Athens with a Bachelor of Science degree.

She met her husband, George T. Bumbu, when she was crowned Queen of the Romanian Leul Society. Jennie was married to her husband for 59 1/2 years. She taught at Brookfield schools after graduating college. When her children were teenagers, Jennie returned to teaching at Trumbull Career Technical Center as one of the first teaching faculty members. She attended Kent State University to study for her master’s degree. She worked side-by-side with her husband at their business, Falls Ford Inc., for 50-plus years.

Jennie was community minded. She enjoyed volunteering. Jennie taught swimming to handicapped children for the Red Cross at the YWCA. She was the chairman of Children’s Concerts held at W.D. Packard Music Hall. Jennie was a golden lifetime member and past president of American Association of University Women. Jennie was a founding member of the Warren Town Hall Community Organization, whose mission is to provide lectures for the education, spiritual and cultural enlightenment of women.

Jennie was a member of The Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church and supported the Ladies Auxiliary and AFORA group, holding numerous offices. Jennie was a charter member of the Ellis Island Restoration Project to preserve our country’s history. She was gifted with a beautiful mezzo-soprano voice and sang a capella for many weddings. Singing Handel’s Messiah was the highlight of her holidays. She was an avid golfer, hitting the links with her husband and her women’s league.

She is predeceased by her husband, George; her parents; and her brother, John.

She leaves behind two brothers, E. Peter and George; four children, Jennifer, Jeannine McCubbins (Paul), Jill and Greg (Laura); four grandchildren, Grant, Ava and Lance Bumbu and Sarah McCubbins.

We shall miss her kindness, wit, enduring support, smile, courage, humility and love. May God’s grace keep her love in our hearts and minds forever.

Rev. Gregory Becker, 72, of Youngstown’s west side, passed away peacefully, Monday morning, March 28, 2022, at his home.

Gregory was born May 19, 1949 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, the only child of the late Wilfred and Marie Becker.

Father Becker was a graduate from St. Vladimir Seminary in New York, his first assignment was in Niagara Falls, New York. In the early 1980s, he moved to Warren, Ohio where he was a priest at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church for over 20 years. He then served as a substitute priest for St. Elias Orthodox in Jamestown, New York. Currently, he was a member and choir director of Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Youngstown. While at Saints Peter and Paul, he was instrumental in starting the adult Bible study, started the blessing of pets and was active in all stewardship projects of the church also.

He was also a member and former president of the MacIntosh User Group, formed in the mid 1980s. Father Becker led an excursion to MacIntosh Seminars, in Boston and New York, creating numerous musical church selections.

He leaves to cherish his memory, three children, Justin, Ana and Maria; a grandson, Seamus; his Saints Peter & Paul Church family; his caregiver, Tom Drabick and his beloved dog, Rumor.

Family and friends may call from Noon – 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022, at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1025 N. Belle Vista Avenue, Youngstown, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Nicholas Popa

March 17, 1931 ~ July 23, 2022

Nicholas Popa 91, of Warren, Ohio entered peacefully into rest on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, He was born the son of John and Anna (Comanescu) Popa on March 17, 1931, in Niles, Ohio and was employed with Packard Electric as a tow motor operator for 27 years. Nicholas was a graduate of Niles McKinley High School class of 1949 and had served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He also enjoyed traveling, flea markets and mowing his lawn.

            He was a member of the Carroll F. Clapp Lodge #655, then Old Erie F&AM Lodge #3 both of Warren. Nicholas was past Monarch of the Ali Baba Grotto, also member of the American Legion Post 700, VFW post 1060, LA societe 40/8, Romanian Legion of Veterans.

            Nicholas is survived by his friend whom along with her family became his caregiver for this past year, Kristy Cera, her fiancé; Brandon Phillips & their children; Tyler Phillips, Kai Cera, Charles Phillips. Nicholas is also leaves behind several family members, friends, neighbors and brothers to cherish his memory.

            He is preceded in death by his parents.

Dorothy V. Trombitas, 94, passed away on September 24, 2022.

Dorothy was born in Warren, OH, on November 8, 1927. The daughter of the late Simeon and Theresa Moyer.

Dorothy graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1946 and was a self-employed seamstress, a profession she enjoyed for over 40 years. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with family; she never missed an opportunity to host them or travel to join the family. She was passionate about gardening and loved the spring and summer when she could nurture flower beds. Dorothy was keenly interested in her local community and was a lifetime member of the Holy Resurrection Romanian orthodox church. With her late husband, John Trombitas, Sr., she was instrumental in the incorporation of Lordstown village. She also enjoyed many years volunteering for the Trumbull County Election Board, where she appreciated the opportunity to greet and assist the local people. In her later years, Dorothy supported veterans and knitted blankets for the Cleveland veterans' home.

Dorothy will be missed by her sons, Simeon Trombitas and his wife, Kellie Snyder Trombitas of San Antonio, TX, John Trombitas, Jr. and his wife, Mary Trombitas, of Clearwater, FL; three grandchildren Paul Trombitas and his wife Nichole, Simeon Trombitas, and Erin Ludwig; five great-grandchildren Colin and Olivia Trombitas and Aislyn, Christopher, and William Ludwig; sister Marian Mermer and niece Dorian Mermer.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Trombitas, Sr., to whom she was married for 59 years.

GEORGE APRIS COSTEA passed away on December 11, 2022, at the age of 89. He was born February 26, 1933, in Warren, Ohio, son of Charles Costea and Pearl Costea Barbat, who preceded him in death. George was a graduate of Warren G Harding High School class of 1951. He retired from Sprint Telephone company in 1995, with 33 years of dedicated service. He was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Army in Artillery Units. George enjoyed playing horseshoes and listening to classical music. He loved being with family on vacations.

He leaves behind his wife of 50 years Florica, his sons Charles (Diana) and Larry (Lorella), granddaughters Katie and Isabella, his sister Virginia , nephew Dave and niece Catherine.

George will be remembered for his perseverance throughout years of illness, and his dedication to his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Virginia Radu Gania, 91, passed away peacefully, with her daughter by her side, at her home in Scottsdale, Arizona on July 12, 2023.  She was born on February 10, 1932, in Warren, Ohio to George and Anna Radu who immigrated from Romania.

Virginia was a 1950 graduate of Warren G. Harding HS and a member of The Holy Resurrection Romanian Orthodox Church. Affectionately known as “Virg”, she had a quick wit and could often be found sharing many of her favorite sayings such as “It is What It is”. Virginia loved to work complex 1,000-piece puzzles. Over the past 3 years in Arizona, she completed over 50 puzzles where she happily posed for a picture with her masterpiece. She was an avid seamstress, loved to travel and looked forward to making yearly trips to her home in Florida where she and her husband, George, would escape the harsh Ohio winters. She enjoyed the company of many friends from all over the US and Canada, whom she met while in Florida. Virg was always first in line for a trip to the Casinos where she loved to play the slot machines. Her fondest memory was a trip she took to Romania where she visited numerous churches throughout the country. Virginia loved to talk about recipes with her grandson, Preston, and especially loved the cookies he made for her.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Jeni Nelson (Geoff) with whom she made her home, George S. Gania, Jr, (Mary Ann), Jerry Gania (Pat), and two other sons, a sister, Mary Corsatea, her beloved Grandson, Preston J. Nelson, grandsons Ryan Nelson, Jeff Gania, Sammy Gania, Jeremy Gania and granddaughters Emily Nelson, Tiffany and Stephanie Chimento, and other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Gania, Sr., and sisters Ann Bradian and Jennie Truta.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the Holy Resurrection Romanian Church in Warren followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. Friends and family may call from 9:30-10:00 with service immediately following.
